Alva J. Martin

Alva J. Martin, District III President

Alva Martin is a native of Bogalusa, Louisiana. She was married to the late William L. Martin and the mother of Dr. Carmen Martin Abston, wife to Attorney Willie T. Abston of Jackson, Mississippi. She is the grandmother of Niles Abston and Niel Abston.

She is a 1964 graduate of Central Memorial High School, Bogalusa, Louisiana. She received her Bachelor of Science Degree in Art Education and Social Sciences at Southern University, Baton Rouge, Louisiana. She received her Master Degree in Special Education and Reading Specialist Certification from the University of Detroit, Detroit, Michigan, and continued her education earning a +30 from Southeastern Louisiana University.

Alva Martin retired from the Detroit Public School System and the Bogalusa City School System with 35 years of service after teaching Social Sciences and Talented Art for many years, also serving as principal at Bogalusa Junior High for 15 years and serving as Supervisor of Education before retiring in 2008.

Also, she continues to be an active member of Mt. Zion Baptist Church of Varnado, Louisiana, serving as Senior Choir President, Youth Sunday School Teacher, Church Beautification Chairperson and serving on the Deaconess Board and women’s auxiliary.

Alva Martin is professionally affiliated with the Louisiana Retired Teachers Association serving as current District III President, served as District III 2nd vice-president, former president of Bogalusa Retired Teachers Association, member of Washington Parish Democratic Executive Board, Concerned Citizens Association and the National Association of Professional Women. Mrs. Martin continues to support and volunteer in her community, parish and state whenever the need arises. She loves to cruise and travel other places, experiencing new things and meeting new people.
