Legislative Update: 4/11/2019

Greetings everyone! Thank you for visiting the LRTA website. This update is the first of many that I plan to provide throughout the 2019 Louisiana Legislative Session. As always, we will send updates regularly through our Email Club and Facebook page. I’ll try to provide an in-depth update on the LRTA & The Legislature webpage as they occur. The regular session began on April 8 and will end no later than June 6, 2019. As you may recall from the Spring Newsletter, I explained that this year is a fiscal year. LRTA is closely tracking three bills and monitoring two bills and a house concurrent resolution. You can view all of these bills on our webpage. This is Day 4 of the session, and we already have an update on two pieces of legislation

SB 14- The Senate Retirement Committee met on April 9 at 9 a.m. The committee heard four bills, including SB 14. This bill proposes imposing term limits on the board of trustees. After much discussion and testimony, the committee decided to voluntarily defer the bill until their next meeting to gather more information.

HCR 20- Representative Sam Jones has filed a house resolution that encourages Congress to repeal the Government Pension Offset/Windfall Elimination Provision. This is important to monitor as it affects our retirees who are impacted by the GPO or WEP. Plus, this resolution demonstrates our legislators are making an effort to understand and take action on the issues impacting Louisiana’s retirees. The Senate Retirement Committee will hear the resolution on April 15.

As the session progresses, I hope to provide regular updates here on our webpage. Whether it’s through a written post or Facebook Live Video, I hope you find these updates succinct, informative and helpful.

Regards,

Rodney R. Watson
