NAEP currently trying to reach retired members in the LRTA District areas to work with them for their upcoming 2026 assessments. This is a PAID opportunity.

Louisiana is one of the states that NAEP finds difficult to recruit for Assessment Coordinators and Assessment Administrators to work NAEP.  Your help in getting this information to your members would be greatly appreciated.  Please let me know if you are able to distribute this information to your members.

Westat, one of the world’s leading providers of educational research, is administering the National Assessment of Educational Progress (NAEP) study for the U.S. Department of Education.  The gathered data are used to formulate The Nation’s Report Card http://www.nationsreportcard.gov/

Westat believes some of the best people to administer these assessments are non-working professionals, given their years of valuable work experience, and invite them to register at www.worknaep.com to apply to work January 26, 2026 to March 20, 2026.  While it seems early to be recruiting, we hire during the summer so that vetting required to work for the US Government in American schools can be completed.

Matha Kober, Hiring Outreach Supervisor is available to answer any questions (850.630.2949).

Interested retirees should register their information at www.worknaep.com. This is a PAID opportunity to contribute their knowledge and skills to this most valuable study of American education.

“Top Volunteer Opportunities for Seniors” highlights 10+ meaningful ways to give back, with a focus on opportunities for retired educators to share their knowledge—mentoring, tutoring, and leading programs at museums, libraries, and historical sites.

Road Scholar has created a guide titled “Top Volunteer Opportunities For Seniors” highlighting 10+ volunteering activities suitable for older adults to explore and positively impact local communities. Outlined are the benefits of service and community engagement and ideas to consider for giving back to the community during retirement. A few opportunities are highlighted, including becoming an advocate for a cause, volunteering at the National Park Service, and working with children through mentoring, tutoring, or assisting in schools. Remote volunteering opportunities are also detailed to allow older adults to contribute skills and time remotely, eliminating the need for physical presence.

This material may help those in your community discover new ways to give back to their communities and engage in meaningful volunteer work.

Volunteer Opportunities

The American Red Cross is in need of compassionate people willing to learn quickly and teach others effectively and efficiently. This will help us build a workforce that does all of these things and much more.

Volunteer Details:

  1. The ARC (American Red Cross) receives between 1,500 and 3,000 calls per year in Louisiana.
  1. We distribute over a million dollars in assistance to families in need across the state.
  1. Volunteers make up over 90% of the ARC’s workforce. These volunteers man the phones 24/7 and other volunteers go out into the field to render assistance to families in need all across Louisiana.

Additionally, the American Red Cross wants to emphasize that they are in hurricane season and need help in other areas, such as:  sheltering, feeding, etc. – caring for all our communities in need is essential work.

Go to www.redcross.org or contact Kathleen McGlone at (775) 291-2838 or call (844) 621-4243 for more details about the volunteering process.

The National World War II Museum is offering a new Storytime at the Museum program every Tuesday and Saturday at 10:00 AM.  Each month, the museum selects a WWII-themed children’s picture book and a corresponding craft.

As a volunteer, you will read the book to the children and guide them in the craft. (Please note that parents will be accompanying their children at all times!) Read more about the Storytime program here: https://www.nationalww2museum.org/programs/storytime-museum

While the Storytime program only lasts about 30 minutes, we ask that all Storytime volunteers commit to one four-hour shift each week as a part of our Museum volunteer program. This would mean working a shift on either Tuesdays or Saturdays from 8:30 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. As a volunteer, Storytime is just one of the many exciting opportunities you can experience! For more information about the volunteer program, and to submit your online application, please click here: https://www.nationalww2museum.org/about-us/our-team/volunteer/volunteer-opportunities.

Please contact the Youth and Family Engagement Specialist, Michaela Brown, at youthprograms@nationalww2museum.org

Each school year, Volunteers in Public Schools (VIPS) recruits, trains, screens, and places over 400 dedicated volunteers and community partners into East Baton Rouge Parish public schools to support underperforming students and provide resources to schools in need.

Our flagship programs, EveryBody Reads and EveryOne Counts, pair volunteers—known as Reading Friends and Math Friends—with students who are struggling in those subjects by one or two grade levels. The goal is to create a nurturing environment filled with fun and mentorship, helping students develop a love for reading and math.

Volunteers are required to submit a background check and attend a brief training, available in person or virtually. Afterward, they can choose the school they’d like to serve and select students to work with based on academic needs and scheduling availability.

Interested participants can sign up by emailing everybodyreads@ebrschools.org or by filling out form.

Our programs are currently active in most elementary schools in East Baton Rouge Parish. You can view the full list of participating schools here: https://vipsbr.org/student-match-menu/
