Lazette L. Watterson

Mrs. Lazette L. Watterson, State President

Lazette Watterson earned her Bachelor of Science degree in Elementary Education and Library Science from Southern University in Baton Rouge. She also holds a master’s +30 degree in Elementary Education and Administration and Supervision from Southeastern Louisiana University. Additionally, she has completed further courses of study from Southeastern Louisiana University, Loyola University and Louisiana Tech University.

Lazette has taught extensively in the Bogalusa area. She was a Title 1 math teacher at Terrace Elementary School and taught fifth grade at Columbia Street Elementary School. She was also a fifth and sixth grade math teacher at Columbia Street Magnet School where she later became principal. Lazette has also served as principal at Long Avenue Elementary School, Terrace Elementary School and Pleasant Hill Elementary School. In addition, she served as a supervisor of student teachers for Dillard University and Southeastern Louisiana University.

She has been an LRTA member for 14 years and joined as an associate member. She is also an active member with Bogalusa Retired Teachers. She has previously served as secretary and president of Bogalusa Retired Teachers. Lazette has served as vice president and president for District III and as a representative for all LRTA districts. She is currently a member of the LRTA executive board.

Not only is she very active with LRTA, she also regularly volunteers within her community. She is a volunteer with Bogalusa City Schools, Northshore Community College’s Youth Build program, Relay for Life and the local Food Bank. She is an active member of St. Paul A.M.E. Church where she serves as usher, stewardress, missionary, trustee, kitchen ministry and member of the Red Cross Disaster Relief Team.  She is also a student of Thirkield United Methodist Chruch Sunday School and Bible study class. Lazette is the past secretary and chaplain of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc. Tau Iota Omega Chapter. She has been an active member with the chapter for 23 years. She serves as a board member for the Bogalusa Federal Credit Union and is a life member of the Southern University Alumni Association. Lazette is a member of the Pupil Progression Team for Bogalusa City Schools, and she was honored as Bogalusa City Schools Teacher of the Year.

She is the daughter of the late Raleigh and Helen Lucas. She was married to the late Larry Watterson, Sr. for over 50 years and has two children, seven grandchildren and two great-grandchildren. Her hobbies include cooking, traveling and volunteering.
