Legislative Update No. 1Dear Friends: The legislature went into session on Monday, March 9. We are very thankful at this point as we do not see any bill that will have a negative or adverse effect on TRSL or LRTA. We are continuing to monitor legislation and will keep the group abreast of any developments. Changes with the legislature happen very fast at times, so please monitor your email account and/or Facebook daily for important alerts requiring your assistance in promoting or opposing a bill. Senate Bill 14 (SB 14) by Senator Price will be heard on Monday, March 16 in the Senate Retirement Committee. We expect it to be reported out favorably. LRTA supports this “Return to Work” bill. It is a good thing for both school systems and retirees as it makes it easier for retirees to return to work. We will give an update on this bill as it makes its way through the legislative process next week. Below is a list of the retirement committee members for both the Senate and House. Please note that there has been a recent change in the chairmanship of the House Retirement Committee as Representative Chris Turner has been named as the new chair of this committee and Representative Tony Bacala has moved over to chair the House Ways and Means Committee. Please save this list and their contact information as it may be needed later in the session. If you do not know your local state representative and senator, please identify them and keep their contact information handy as it will more than likely be needed at some point this session. It is very important for you to know your local legislators! Thank you for your support and participation in LRTA’s work to protect TRSL and to advocate for our retired educators.
