St. Bernard Retired Teachers Association Shares Tribute with School Board

(Article submitted by St. Bernard RTA President Paul Grethel)

The past and the present in education connected recently when leaders from the St. Bernard Parish Retired Teachers Association visited a St. Bernard School Board meeting for a special presentation.

Paul Grethel, the President of the Association, was joined by his fellow board members Cindy Kooke (Vice President), Mickey Lux (Secretary), and Rosemary Gioia (Treasurer) to share the group’s appreciation for the effort and commitment of the parish public schools.

Grethel said the Association’s aim is to focus its efforts on St. Bernard, especially the teachers and the other members of the school system.

“Over the last two decades, there have been some difficult times for the community,” Grethel said. “But the district not only survived, it flourished. And the reason we are here tonight is to acknowledge what the schools have done in fostering an environment for education.”

After his brief remarks, Grethel and his fellow officers presented the Board with a token of its appreciation: a beautiful, acrylic trophy commemorating the moment. Grethel said the award is a tribute to the efforts of teachers, administrations, and support personnel who all do what is best for children each day.

“From hurricanes, the pandemic, and even a tornado, we are proud of what you all have done,” he said. “This is to honor the ongoing commitment of the St. Bernard Parish School Board and its dedicated teachers and support personnel in providing quality educational instruction so that the students in this community are responsive, productive citizens and lifelong learners.”

Superintendent Doris Voitier said the visit and presentation were much appreciated.

“With a theme of gratitude this year, we were so happy to see some of our dear friends back with us,” Voitier said. “The legacy of learning continues here in St. Bernard, and we are so very thankful for all of our teachers — retired and current — who continue to give so much to our students. We are grateful for you all.”
