The teacher weekly wage penalty hit 21.4 percent in 2018, a record high

The Economic Policy Institute released a study showing teachers were paid 21.4% less in 2018 in weekly wages than similar college graduates. The teacher pay raise is a hot topic this legislative session. Teacher pay raises directly impact active teachers but retired teachers are also affected. The Teachers’ Retirement System of Louisiana (TRSL) is a sustainable and healthy system due in part to more active teachers paying into the system than retired teachers drawing out. Recruiting and retaining teachers is important to the retirement system, as well as school systems.
