Superintendent James Williams presents a certificate to the Retired Teacher of the Year Linda Harris.

Superintendent James Williams presented a certificate to the Retired Teacher of the Year, Linda Harris. Superintendent Williams noted Harris’s enthusiasm for teaching and her focus on her students. Harris commented on the excellence of Vernon Parish Schools and the professionalism of the teachers and administrators in the system. She also shared some funny anecdotes involving dinosaurs and turtles that became part of North Polk’s first-grade lore.

Harris taught in several elementary schools in her home state of Tennessee before moving to Leesville with her husband, who was stationed at Fort Polk. Here, she taught at North Polk Elementary, and retired after 36 successful years in education.

Vernon Parish Retired Teachers’ Association (VPRTA) president Beryl Ford encouraged all Vernon Parish retired teachers to join the Louisiana Retired Teachers Association (LRTA) and the local VPRTA. The local group meets quarterly, on the third Thursday of February, May, August, and November. The next meeting will be at the Vernon Parish Library on May 19, with District VII president, Walter Rogers, as the guest speaker.

Keep up the great work VPRTA! How did you celebrate Retired Teachers Day?
