NEW: Update on H.R. 82

Today is an important day! As of today, July 15, 291 members of Congress have signed on as co-sponsors of H.R. 82. H.R. 82 would fully repeal the Government Pension Offset (GPO) and the Windfall Elimination Provision (WEP). As a reminder, the GPO and WEP unfairly penalize Louisiana’s retired teachers by reducing or eliminating their spousal Social Security benefit or their own Social Security benefit. 

Congressman Rodney Davis (author of H.R. 82) and Congressman Garrett Graves walked down a written request to the Clerk and filed to have H.R. 82 heard on the floor and voted on in Congress. The rules mandate a floor vote on any bill that receives 290 co-sponsors.

This will be the first time in history that a floor vote has been taken on any bill to repeal or modify WEP/GPO. The vote will likely be in September. LRTA will continue to update members on the progress of this bill and others regarding the GPO and WEP. Stay tuned!
